Schools, Fresno County, 1870-1890
Summary: This file contains all schools marked in Thomas Thompson's 1891 atlas of Fresno County.
This shapefile was created from an 1891 Fresno County atlas that had been georeferenced on ArcMap. All schools in Fresno County as shown on the map were marked in the shapefile for the purpose of mapping population centers; ie where people were actually settling down. It should be noted that any schools located in the major cities would not have appeared on the map.
For further analyses and commentary, please read Cameron Ormsby's article "Land Speculation in Fresno County: 1860-1891" at the following address: http:[edited] Fresno County Atlas (1891) created by Thomas H. Thompson
Methodology: Each page of the county atlas was cropped in photoshop and then georeferenced in ArcMap with the historical township and range sections. The schools were located and added to the shape file by hand.
