VIOLENCE AGAINST JOURNALISTS IN AFGHANISTAN 2001-2011

The Internews Violence Against Journalists – Afghanistan project visualizes incidents of violence on an interactive map that allows visitors to browse data by geography and year. This map features incident data collected by Nai and also features several overlays that provide users with a rich sense cultural and environmental context. Below you will find more information on the various data sources used to create this visualization.

Nai Data

Individual reports of violence against journalists - 265 in total - were collected by Nai Supporting Afghanistan Open Media, an organization dedicated to supporting independent journalists in Afghanistan through training and advocacy. Included in the data are details about the journalist including their name, gender, occupation and organization. The data also includes information about the specific incident such as the date, location (province), incident type, suspected attacker and motive. We processed this data in collaboration with Nai and Internews to produce a total of incidents by province and year.
